It’s hard to believe that Herbert will no longer be available to add wisdom and good sense to discussions of mining issues in Africa. More important, I, like many others, I suspect, have lost what I consider a really good friend.
Herbert was dedicated to improving lives in Sierra Leone. Sometimes he was frustrated by the barriers, but he always retained his good humor. While we worked together visiting mine sites in Sierra Leone, he introduced me to the county: its food, its beaches, its villages, and its people. He was huge fun to work with. I was welcomed by him and Selina in his home in Freetown.
I was hoping that he would soon visit us again in Boston, but alas, that is not to be. In the relationship box below, I have tried to check both “colleague” and “friend.” It forced me to choose: although both are appropriate, I took “friend” as the more important to me.
Condolences to his family, who have experienced a great loss.
