I’m proud to have worked with, and learned from, Herbert M’cleod over the last decade. Herbert brought unwavering commitment and reserves of energy to the challenges of underdevelopment, and sought to identify and bring about solutions through insight, data, and collaboration. Ever the iconoclast, Herbert saw through established wisdom and conventional excuses and never suffered explanations that didn’t explain the facts. And yet he was warm and inclusive, thoughtful and humble, a great listener. Kind, and smiling. As a lead academic in IGC’s Liberia program that Herbert directed, I learned from Herbert’s questioning and his experience, from his patience and his optimism. I will miss my colleague and friend, and yet still feel his guidance and hear his voice, advising.
