Dear Selina, we followed the memorial service which was a dignified and fitting farewell for Herbert regarding his sterling contribution to development practice and policy advice across Africa and concern for local-level challenges in different spheres. I was sad by this afternoon ceremony but proud and comforted by the tributes made.
He was a giant in the area of development knowledge and practice and delivered policy advice with integrity and intelligent diplomacy. I will miss our occasional exchanges in writing and verbally on key issues of African development, when he would tell me that my views are theoretically interesting but I need to subject them to the test of practice and behind the scene bargaining of the real world of contemporary African politics and society. Our profession has lost a valuable member. May his good soul rest in perfect peace. And May God be with you and your children in this your moment of great loss. Sincerely, Frank.
